The Rotary Club of West Perth MAGIC SHOW

When: Thursday, 15 December 2011 - 11.00am; 2.00pm; and 5.00pm

Where: Perth Convention Exhibition Centre

The Magic Show is the major fund raising project undertaken by the Rotary Club of West Perth. We employ a tele-marketing company to contact business premises to donate money to enable disadvantaged people to attend a session of the Magic Show. World class performers typically run 3 shows on one day. Up to 16,000 people have attended to see acts which include an Illusionist, Ventriloquists, circus acts and more.

Moneys raised from this show allows our club to donate to worthy causes such as Neuromuscular Research Institute , School Volunteer Program (Christine Gray), Princess Margaret Hospital for Cancer Research for Children and other smaller worthy causes.

RECYCLING MEDICAL EQUIPMENT

A Moving Experience: About twenty West Perth and Heirisson Rotarians and their family members reported for duty at RPH early on Saturday morning to shift more than 100 hospital beds from an eleventh floor ward via one lift to be trucked to Mania National in Wangarra. Beds were stacked two at a time and slowly fed down a slow-moving lift to a small fleet of Express-Link trucks (special thanks to Stan's friend, Russell Whiteall).

After a lot of grunt, the redundant hospital beds were squared away and the contented workers could enjoy a barbeque and drink at Mania National, thanks to the generosity of Stan, who stored the goods. The fully loaded container with 48 beds was a miracle of Stan’s sardine packing and all the beds were checked and prepared for shipment with a full set of accessories and protection to avoid damage in transit. A second container for the rest of the beds is planned.

An initiative of our own Jill Smith (District Chair of DIK), this project will eventually ship the beds to Samoa where they will replace beds at the Apia Hospital. This will allow beds to be available for patients in outlying village clinics who have nothing at the moment. This is just one part of the club's Donation in Kind Recycle Project, steered by Jill and has come about through the intervention of fellow RAWCS committee member, Colin Gilbert from Heirisson RC. Colin's niece is married to a Samoan and alerted him to the need. Through that contact the Rotary Club of Apia has arranged for the delivery and distribution of hospital beds. Well done Jill and well done West Perth Rotary!

SEE-LONG Award - Spectacle collections for Sri Lanka

SEE-Long Award, Rotary Club of West Perth

The Rotary Club of West Perth International Service Committee has instituted a club project to collect unwanted spectacles and ship them to Sri Lanka. This worthy project is helping many poor people in Sri Lanka to correct their sight. To date hundreds of spectacles have been collected by members. As an incentive to collect even more spectacles, and to add a fun and competitive edge to the project, the club will award a perpetual trophy to the member who collects the most spectacles for this project.

The annual award , known as the SEE-Long trophy, will be presented each year, with other club awards, eg. entertainment book sales, at Changeover Night.

Spectacles should be delivered to Prof Ralph Martins.

Please get behind ths project to collect spectacles from your local optical dispenser and WIN!

Note: Older members will recognise in the award's title "Sri Lanka", name (Ceylon) after it was known as Serendib (1505).
