This week Arthur Blaquiere gave us another little insight into his employment adventures; this time from the 1990s. Arthur was being taken from Pakistan to a neighbouring (‘stan country) to a chemical factory where there had been a gas explosion. He joined the light aircraft at dawn and found himself seated next to a tribal leader. When they landed he was greeted by 6 Territorial Policemen who formed a protective escort; apparently he represented a kidnap and hold for ransom prospect. It seems the remainder of the trip went without incident.

Our future meeting place at CU29 West Perth

Rosco McGlashan is holding an open garage tour to view his rocket-powered land speed machine on May 31^st. See the flyer in the Rotary WA Roundup No 53.

The Club enjoyed a great night last week at Chez Pierre with 21 in attendance.

David Franklyn has submitted his application to join the Club.

Future meetings. This week is again at Kailis Bros in Leederville and then, on 4^th June, we move to CU29 on the corner of Outram and Hay Streets in West Perth. The cost of the breakfast at Kailis remains at $34. At CU29 we will be treated to a cooked buffet smorgasbord for the cost of $31.

Following the June 4^th meeting, judging for the Nurses Vocational Awards will take place.

Kiara from Kailis Bros joined the meeting briefly to allow President Kym to express the Club’s appreciation to the Kailis team for their hospitality over the past 4 years.

Guest Speaker

The hostess with the mostess, Elizabeth, introduced our guests from Thriive: Meg Huitema (CEO) and Laura Thornloe (Marketing Manager).

Meg explained that Thriive supports at risk and disadvantaged kids through its programs, primarily “Camp for Kids”. Some of the kids that join them have suffered abuse.

Children are referred to Thriive by communities, schools and other third party referrals. They include foster kids and kids from remote communities in the Pilbara and Gascoyne. Thriive doesn’t take kids under 7 years of age.

Thriive conducts about 20 programs annually. Some are holiday activities in regional towns during holidays and camps at places like Dwellingup.

Meg spoke about the camp at Dwellingup one July and how cold it was. The kids often complained about being very cold. One young 9 year old girl arrived wearing shorts and a Tee shirt. They bought some clothing for the kids at Kmart. The young girl was given a pink tracksuit but it was noticed that she wasn’t wearing it; she didn’t want to get it dirty.

This has led to a campaign to raise $5K to buy sleeping bags rated to -2 degrees to give to their participants. The kids will even wear the bags when not sleeping as a rug wrapped over their shoulders. They have 92 kids booked in already.

Thriive is a small organisation that relies on volunteers. It has 1 Full Time and 4 Part Time employees but it has 850 volunteers.

Thriive is running a fundraising gala ball on the 13th June (see the “Luminous” flyer below) at which a past participant who is now a volunteer will speak.

Thriive fundraiser flyer for 13 June Gala Ball

Last week Arthur Blaquiere visited the Paticia Giles Centre to check out their new Freezer that the Club paid for, the Club also provided $800 for them to use to re-stock the freezer. The Centre and staff are thrilled with their new acquisition and can now accept food donations when offered in the future. All food goes towards the Mothers and children after suffering a domestic violence crisis.

Robs Long Walk Home started April 19

Don't forget all proceeds raised by Robs Walk go to Neuromuscular WA formerly Muscular Dystrophy Association of WA.

Rob has currently raised over $41,000 towards Neuromuscular WA on his walk.
