The Rotary Club of
West Perth

A visit from the DG, Graham Peden and Western Endeavour Rotary Club

On Thursday 3rd October, Members and friends enjoyed a great presentation from District 9455 DG, Graham Peden. We also warmly welcomed a number of members from Western Endeavour Rotary Club.

The DG spoke about the importance of local engagement within our own communities and how all Clubs need to focus on diversity and inclusion.

The growth of Rotary, at a Club and brand level is something that requires focus and adaptation from everyone. Graham noted that we should always focus on, and promote the meaningful volunteer work we do, and the impact our projects have both locally and globally.

Thanks to all who joined us for breakfast to hear from Graham and Byron.

GREAT achievement for the All Abilities Play Space  - WINNER of the National AILA
Earlier this year, the Jo Wheatley Play Space won an Award of Excellence (Playgrounds category) in the WA Chapter of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) Awards.

Winning this award automatically qualified the Play Space as an entry into the National AILA Awards, which were presented in Melbourne last week. The AILA Landscape Architecture Awards program provides a key vehicle for the promotion of the achievements and work of landscape architects in Australia. It is an opportunity for public and peer recognition of landscape architect’s work, and demonstrates to industry, business, government and the wider community the positive impact the profession has on Australian lives through the planning and design of the built and natural environments.

It was always going to be a long shot, being up against very high profile, and seriously high budget projects, however the Jo Wheatley All Abilities Play Space won the Landscape Architects Award (Playgrounds Category) at the National AILA Awards!

This is pretty impressive, it is a relatively small community-funded project.  Congratulations to all involved - a wonderful project that fosters inclusion of all ages, genders, abilities and cultures is truly valued by our Club.
A couple of weeks ago President Geoff gave us all an update on the 2018 round of grant funding from the Rotary Foundation. Pretty phenomenal to see the collective dollar value generated through our Rotary commitment across the globe.

Together we all contribute and make a massive difference.
West Leederville Primary School Garden Project set to flourish
It was great to hear a progress report from Nigel Blacklock last week in regards to the local school gardening project. This project is a long time in the making and we are thrilled it is finally off the ground.

With a $3,960 successful federal funding grant, funds will go towards the purchase of 2 x 3000 litre rain water tanks, a pump and piping, a garden shed, fencing and a worm farm. Further funding is still required and the Community Services Committee are currently looking at sponsorship and other opportunities for this funding.

The aim of the project is be as hands-on as possible for all the kids, teachers and parents from the school and it is exciting to note they will all be involved from day one.

Our Club is committed to supporting our local West Perth and West Leederville community and we cannot wait to see the hand over to the school early in the new year.
Together we learn!
Happy Birthday!
Our October birthday wishes this month go to Bernie Foley on the 15th October (Yesterday!) and to Tony Delich on the 10th October.

We hope were both super spoilt on your special days.
Breakfast Meeting Thursday 17 October  - former WA Attorney-General Cheryl Edwardes AM
Look forward to seeing all members at breakfast on Thursday to hear from Mrs Cheryl Edwardes AM, Barrister and Solicitor, Deputy Chair of the WA Football Commission and former Attorney General.

Mrs Edwardes was born in Mt Hawthorn and became a barrister and solicitor before entering politics. She was elected into the WA Legislative Assembly as the Liberal Minister for Kingsley in 1989.

Mrs Edwardes was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (OA) on 13 June 2016 for significant service to the people and Parliament of Western Australia, to the law and to the environment, and through executive roles with business, education and community organisations.

Our Club Strategy for 2020 and beyond!

Last week our Club met and we were all provided with an update on the status of the strategic planning process by President Elect Stephen Lee. As most would be aware, a request was put out for those interested to participate in groups sessions across the three strategic priority areas. Feedback was received and collated and we are now in a position to begin addressing the first phase of the plan.

The Board are committed to achieving our strategic objectives and will ensure we discuss strategic priorities and actions at each Board meeting. A full copy of our Plan can be found on the website HERE:
